Tesla w/ self driving.

The cost of maintenance is way cheaper than a gas car and electricity is cheaper than gas. Tesla, at that price range, don't lose much value and they are fun af to drive.

You pay more upfront but in 5 years time you actually own more in net worth with a Tesla. However, since your price point is in Tesla range anyways just get a Tesla.

Not in Australia. Even a model 3 would be close to double that budget for the base spec. And I think our electricity costs are higher than the US too.

$40k AUD seems to be the sweet spot in terms of good value. If it were me in your position and wanting a car to last ten years, just get a Corolla or a Golf. You'll be getting at least mid-high spec or maybe even sports/mainstream performance models at that price point, tonnes of practicality, good resale, decent reliability, etc.

Even though I used to be a Honda fan, their recent stuff doesn't inspire confidence and feels like they are lagging behind others in safety tech.

I find it crude/vulgar. Whilst society has become desensitised to it thanks to pop culture, I don't think it's an appropriate word to use in most of the contexts which you'd hear it in 2019.

I should clarify though I'm not exactly going to be shocked or tell someone off if they use it, but I personally don't use it and I would be disappointed if my children used it.

I'm personally looking at a Mercades CLA

If Op is in Australia, pretty much only the Civic and Camry will be in that budget of $43k AUD ($30k equivalent). The other cars are priced quite a bit higher in Australia (but usually have better specifications), and some of them even attract LCT (luxury car tax).

Ten years = reliability and TCO matters more.

And Op, given you're Aussie, do you have an AUD budget which might make it easier for me to think up realistic car choices or should I assume it's at today's spot rate (so circa $43k AUD)?

Not sure if anyone here watches Car Throttle on Youtube but I've found the trio of them to give a similar vibe to the old Top Gear UK series before it became big budget (and then before The Grand Tour). The 20-30min episodes are perfect and it makes me feel inspired to want to try my luck at some of those types of challenges. I also really like how they show the actual buying process and highlight what the negotiation off eBay/Gumtree/Facebook Marketplace actually looks like for a buyer vs Top Gear which only shows them rolling up in a ready-purchased car.

er.... elaborate?

There was a scathing video posted on Youtube recently from some people who worked on the show about how the challenges were faked - eg $5k budget challenge (it was the buy a cheap luxury car challenge) but in reality they had $10k to spend and then got mechanics to work on the cars prior to the show so that they'd work, getting crew to do all the driving scenes (eg drag races) rather than the stars, etc. And confirmed Tanner = Stig.

Edit: Found the video. Note it was obviously from someone with a bit of an axe to grind, but it doesn't sound implausible:

I think what you wanted was a surge protector.
Unless you experience a lot of power outages.

And as for the sine wave thing.
It's hard to find a good Pure Sine Wave generator, or converter..which is what this is.
So I would imagine, they are not putting out a pure sine wave. idk...

Either way, unless you lose power all the time, a surge protector is probably what you need.

I wanted a UPS for the uninterrupted power aspect should someone trip the cable or the power goes out. My wife unplugged my NAS once to plug in her hairdryer and it took forever to rebuild the RAID.

I don't use RAM caching for writing to my SSDs (my PC seems fast enough) but I'd rather not have the risk of data loss or corruption just over something trivial like a power outage.

As for pure sine wave generator, I just remember reading that a decent UPS will help but if you're the kind of person who needs something very specific for your use case, then good luck as I'm sure it won't come cheap.

Those are meant for power outages I thought.

A surge is a bit different.
Everyone should have a surge protector.

And also, the UPS's are generators I think.
I wondering what kind of sinewave they put out.
I never thought about that until now.

I'm not an expert on this but my understanding was if you have potentially irregular electricity, the artificial sinewave generated by a decent UPS will help reduce risk of issues with your PSU. It's not really an issue for me but just something I remember reading and thought may as well invest in protecting my $5k desktop and prevent data corruption if power suddenly goes out.
